Emily Hobhouse and the Second Boer War Concentration Camps Scandal (1984)

Emily Hobhouse, a remarkable British social reformer and humanitarian, played a pivotal role in highlighting the plight of civilians during the Second Boer War (1899-1902). Born on April 9, 1860, in St. Ive, Cornwall, Hobhouse dedicated her life to advocating for social justice and challenging the injustices perpetrated during times of conflict. During the Boer War, Hobhouse became deeply concerned about the conditions in the British concentration camps where Boer civilians, especially women and children, were interned. In 1900, she embarked on a mission to South Africa to witness the situation firsthand and provide relief to those suffering in the camps.
