I loved watching Starship Troopers when it came out in theaters back in the nineties. I didn't think too much about the idea that all authority comes violent force or the fear of it back then. But it makes sense because most people only do things because they are afraid of men with boom sticks coming and locking them up. Good examples include paying your taxes and child support. As for forcing everyone into conscription that's a terrible idea unless there's an existential threat. Israel is a good example of that with both men and women serving in their military. Nothing solidifies a national identity like serving together for your country. That may also be one of the reasons that Israel's fertility rate is above replacement. It helps solidify a collective identity and I spoke to Malcolm Collins about how when your group is under physical threat of annihilation you're more likely to reproduce. We could do the same in the west if we had some external threat either real or made up. But in Starship Troopers the Johnny Rico and his classmates had the choice to serve which would guarantee citizenship and I'm assuming the right to vote as well? In Ender's game there wasn't conscription. The children were selected for their talents and then trained in Orbit to fight the Formics another bug species. I've seen both films at least half a dozen times and are amazing and have aged well. My parents left former Yugoslavia because they didn't want me to serve in the military because they feared that I would be sent off to war and they were completely correct. If I had stayed I would have sent to Kosovo or did some other duty back in 1999 in my early twenties. When I travelled to Egypt with a bunch of Bosnians, Croatians and Serbs in the 2000s one guy told me he was ordered to guard a barracks while Nato was attacking buildings like that and he just sat inside waiting for them to fall on him terrified and if he left he would have been severely punished.
