Joan of Arc, born in 1412 in Domrémy, France, was a peasant girl who claimed to receive divine visions urging her to support Charles VII in his quest to reclaim the French throne during the Hundred Years' War. At the age of 17, she gained permission to lead French troops against the English.

Joan played a pivotal role in lifting the Siege of Orléans in 1429, a key victory for the French. She also saw Charles VII crowned at Reims, solidifying his legitimacy as the French monarch. Unfortunately, Joan was later captured by the Burgundians, handed over to the English, and subjected to a politically motivated trial.

Accused of charges such as heresy and witchcraft, Joan was found guilty and burned at the stake in 1431 at the age of 19. Decades later, an appellate court overturned her conviction, recognizing her as a martyr. In 1920, Joan of Arc was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church, and she remains an enduring symbol of courage and faith.
