Study Of Paul's Epistle To The Romans - The Fundamentals Of Christian Education & Church Principles. || Rom. 16:14-18
• Rom. 16:14 Paul seems to join all those who were joined by kindred together, nearness of habitation, or any other circumstance. It could not but encourage everyone especially the poor, to be greeted by name, who perhaps did not know that the apostle had ever heard of them. You will observe that while the apostle did not forget anyone that is worthy of note, yet he adjusted the nature of his greetings to the degrees of worth in those whom he greeted. It is always good to give honour to whom honour is due and be generous in our kindness.

• Rom. 16:15-16 What a great name! It comes from "Philos Logos" or "Lover of the Word." Philologus and Julia were perhaps husband and wife. Both names occur several times in connection with the imperial household of Rome. Nereus, according to a tradition which goes back to the fourth century, is associated with Flavia Domitilla, a Christian woman who was banished to the Island of Pandateria by her uncle Emperor Domitian in A.D. 95. She was released after his death the following year. Olympas is an abbreviated form of Olympiodorus. These all appear to have been a community of faith. This kiss on the cheek was practiced by the early church as a symbol of the love and unity among the early Christians.

• Rom 16:17-18 There is something else in this chapter that iis intriguing. That is, in the middle of his list of friends to greet, Paul inserts a list of foes to avoid. "Mark those who cause division by teaching what is contrary to the doctrine I have shared with you," he said. Notice he doesn't say, "Debate them," "Study them," or even, "Have compassion on them." He says, "Mark and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ." Their motive was wrong. They were not serving our Lord Jesus Christ. They were serving their own belly, meaning they were selfish if not sensual. They were walking according to the flesh (Rom_8:4-5). Furthermore, their methods were deceptive. Smooth words (Gk. chrēstologia) mean “good, kind, gracious.” Flattering speech (Gk. eulogia) means smooth, praising speech. Thus, with gracious praise they deceive (Gk. exapataō) … the simple (Gk. akakos), the gullible.
