On Saturday, January 27, 2024 at around 10:06 p.m., Fort Worth Police Department officers assigned to the West 7th Entertainment District saw a gray pickup truck exit a parking lot with no headlights at 1000 Foch St. and began driving the wrong way on Morton St., which is a one-way street.
The truck then backed up, nearly striking a marked police unit, and drove up onto a curb. The officers could hear the passenger telling the driver to stop. Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop based on the erratic driving by activating their overhead lights, but the driver took off, driving rapidly through the parking lot. At this point officers were concerned that the driver was possibly intoxicated due to his reckless driving and posed a threat to the public in a busy entertainment district.
The officers observed the truck strike several curbs and nearly collide with other vehicles while driving eastbound on W. 7th St. At one point the truck cut in front of oncoming traffic and jumped a curb into a bank parking lot then struck a pole which destroyed the front left wheel. Despite the nearly disabled vehicle, the suspect driver continued to flee from officers at a high rate of speed back toward the highly populated West 7th area.
Due to the suspect’s erratic driving behavior, officers backed off and slowed down.
The suspect drove around stopped traffic at the intersection of West 7th and University. The vehicle struck a pole, then a stopped car, and then struck two pedestrians, an adult male and an adult female, who were on the far side of the intersection.
Pursuing officers were on scene within seconds and immediately rendered aid to the victims who were transported to area hospitals with serious injuries.
The suspected drunk driver who was identified as Andrew Guerra, 29 of Grand Prairie was taken into custody and transported to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries. Guerra refused to provide a blood sample. Therefore, officers obtained a search warrant for his blood alcohol content to be determined.
Guerra is currently in the Tarrant County Jail on a $95,000 bond. He is charged with Evading Arrest/Detention with Vehicle Causing Serious Bodily Injury, Intoxication Assault with Vehicle Causing Seriously Bodily Injury, and Unlawful Restraint. His mugshot is available on our media portal.
Guerra does not have any prior alcohol-related convictions.
The passenger in Guerra’s truck has been cooperative with this investigation and is the victim in the Unlawful Restraint charge.
Impaired driving is 100% preventable. Drunk driving cases are avoidable and can be traumatizing to victims and their families and put our community at risk. There are too many viable options available for people to get home safely without driving while impaired, such as rideshare, taxis, and designating a non-drinking driver when out with a group.
