FAQs: “Should I train heavy or light? What about failure training?” Fatigue Management & Cost/Benefit Analysis.
-
So there are best use scenarios for all these things but before that, there’s another question you need to ask yourself.
-
“Is it worth the recovery COST to get this training effect?”
-
The fatigue you incur from, for instance: moving faster, training longer, training with more load, more frequent training, supersets, forced reps, shorter rest periods…
-
All efficacious and certainly a thing to do in the right context but why are you doing it? Is there a way to get an equivalent training effect at a lower cost? Does that matter to you? Is it just what you prefer and you’re willing to accept the cost? All important questions.
-
For instance, since I do my conditioning (Stepmill or bike generally) daily, when I train my legs (with resistance training/lifting) I do so sub-maximally. I care more about my daily conditioning than I do incurring the recovery cost from training my legs heavier or with closer proximity to failure.
-
Conversely, while I don’t do heavy axial (spine) loading, I pull relatively heavy and close(r) to failure because A: it doesn’t negatively impact my daily activities and B: I enjoy it enough that if it does, I’m willing to accept that slight downside.
-
It’s not a “better/worse” question. It’s a “cost/benefit” one and THAT is a decision you have to make for yourself.
