The Lions managed a 48-yard field goal by Jason Hanson just before halftime to make the score 17-3 at the break. The Lions closed the gap on a 73-yard TD pass from Scott Mitchell (50 att., 29 comp., 331 yds., 2 TDs, 1 int.) to Johnnie Morton in the third quarter. A one-yard run by Mike Alstott put the Bucs ahead by 14 late in the fourth quarter. Barry Sanders (8 rec., 102 yds., 1 TD) scored on a 66-yard reception with 15 seconds remaining in the game to bring the Lions within seven at 24-17, but the Detroit was unable to recover the ensuing onside kick and the Bucs held on for the win.
