‘It was dark in the room—what would have been Ruby and Thad’s room—where they lay Ruby in her coffin. The whole room smelled of her life. Lavendar from the fields where they played. Sassafras from the trees they climbed. And magnolia under the tree where they had their first kiss. All of it had enticed and made him smile. But now beneath all of it, she carried a new sulphureous scent. It was the smell of earth and decay. It was the morbid scent of corruption. And it was the scent of finality—death. With this new scent there would be no more runs through the lavender. There would be no more climbs into the boughs of the sassafras. And as he hit his bruised legs with his fists wailing angrily, there would be no more kisses under the magnolia.’
