TODAY IN PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY: Pitrim Sorokin on Crisis, Calamity, and Transition

Sunday 04 February 2024 is the 135th anniversary of the birth of Pitirim Alexandrovich Sorokin (04 February1889 to 11 February 1968), who was born in the village of Turya in the Russian Empire on this date in 1889.

Sorokin, like many thinkers active during the twentieth century, saw his time as a time of crisis and calamity, but he differed from Toynbee is seeing this chaos not as the death of a civilization, but as a great transition from one sociocultural paradigm to another—an event that is both destructive and constructive by turns.
