The Apostle Thomas and the Evangelism of India

Did the Apostle Thomas travel all the way to India in order to convert the Hindus to Christianity? And did St. Thomas use the figure of the Indian holy man or sadhu to better explain the divinity of Jesus Christ to the natives of the subcontinent?
