By early 1945, Hitler had lost all control over the military reality facing Germany. Allied strategic bombing reduced much of Berlin to rubble, and by April 25 the Red Army had completely surrounded the city, trapping 500,000 German troops in the western suburbs. These ruined streets became the scene of fierce hand-to-hand fighting between eight Russian armies and the pitiful remnants of the militia, the Wehrmacht SS and the Hitler Youth.

On April 30, the Reichstag was stormed and the Fuhrer committed suicide. The city and its population fell into the hands of the Russians, who carried out terrible revenge.
