The police officers from the Gang Intelligence Unit pulled over the driver after witnessing him fail to use a turn signal at a light. Upon discovering that the driver did not have a license, they asked him to exit the vehicle. However, the driver attempted to flee in the car, leading to an altercation where an officer's leg was caught in the vehicle and he was dragged for about 20 yards. Despite attempts to use a taser, it failed, and the suspect continued to drag the officer in reverse. Fearing for his life, the officer fired at least one shot, striking the driver in the upper chest. The driver was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The injured officer was also taken to the hospital but is expected to recover. During the investigation, a Glock firearm with an extended magazine and a Glock switch was found in the car, along with narcotics and other illegal substances. A passenger in the vehicle was initially detained but has since been released. It was revealed that the driver was out on bond for previous charges related to a stolen vehicle and carrying a concealed weapon, which violated the conditions of his bond.
