On January 11, 2024, Phoenix police officers responded to a welfare check request at a home near 33rd and Taylor Streets. The caller said they had not seen their neighbor for several days and water was leaking out of the house. When the officers arrived, they tried to contact anyone inside the house, but were met with gunfire from the homeowner, who was armed with a handgun. The officers exchanged shots with the suspect, who was later found dead inside the house. No officers were injured in the incident.
