Hike #6: Asbestos Mountain, Santa Rosa Mountains (San Bernardino NF), CA

Hiking Asbestos Mountain: Santa Rosa Mountains (San Bernardino National Forest), CA.

Asbestos Mountain is part of the Santa Rosa Mountains. The terrain is desert and any semblance of a traditional trail to reach the summit does not exist. The idea is to keep an eye out for rock cairns throughout the gully that heads up the mountain's south slope. While looking for the cairns, it is necessary to keep an eye on where you step, since you are walking over large rocks, boulders, and desert plants. Thrown into the calculation a 1000' elevation gain in about a mile of climbing. Mix all this together, and you have the formula for Asbestos Mountain. Glad to finally get this one in!
