Bukele seeks reelection in spite of constitution
El Salvador’s president, Nayib Bukele, is viewed by many as a national hero who confronted the country’s violent gangs with unwavering determination.
However, others see the populist leader as a 21st-century autocrat responsible for widespread human rights abuses and a consolidation of power in his own hands.
Often self-described as the “world’s coolest dictator,” he appears poised to secure a second presidential term in the upcoming election on Sunday, the Associated Press reported.
