In the prologue of Grand Theft Auto V, titled "Prologue," players are introduced to the game's three main protagonists: Michael De Santa, Trevor Philips, and Franklin Clinton.

The mission begins with a heist in progress, led by Michael, Trevor, and two other accomplices, Brad and an unnamed driver. The crew is robbing a bank in North Yankton, a snowy region reminiscent of North Dakota. As they make their escape, they face intense police pursuit.

During the escape, the driver is killed, and the crew encounters a police roadblock. A shootout ensues, resulting in Brad getting shot, Michael being wounded, and Trevor assuming both men are dead. As Trevor tries to fend off the police, Michael gets shot, causing Trevor to believe he's dead as well. Trevor narrowly escapes, leaving the scene.

However, neither Michael nor Brad dies. Michael faked his death to retire from a life of crime, while Brad is later revealed to have been killed by the police. Trevor, unaware of Michael's survival, assumes he's dead and starts his own criminal enterprises.

The prologue sets the stage for the intertwined stories of Michael, Trevor, and Franklin as they navigate the criminal underworld of Los Santos, the fictionalized version of Los Angeles, in the main storyline of Grand Theft Auto V
