Bennie Thompson Says Biden Is ‘Doing a Good Job’ on the Border

BALLASY: “Couldn’t President Biden solve a lot of what’s going on at the border in terms of the encounters, the record amount of encounters? Couldn’t he do a lot of that via executive order? That’s what Republicans have been saying, because he rescinded a lot of the Trump era executive orders related to the border.”
Thompson: “Well, I think he’s doing a good job with those executive orders he’s put in place. The question is whether or not the numbers coming across the border can be decreased. I think he’s doing a good job.”
BALLASY: “And do you think — are you concerned that the U.S. could be letting in a lot of migrants who have possible backgrounds when it comes to criminal records, because they’re not able to fully vet them, given the amount, the record amount of them coming in?”
Thompson: “Well, my understanding is that to the extent of resources allowed, they’re doing all they can to check it. There’s no hundred percent, but from my vantage point, they’re doing the best job they can.”
BALLASY: “What do you think about this border deal? Are you — a lot of Republicans are saying it’s dead on arrival already, based on what we’ve seen.”
Thompson: “That’s unfortunate. That’s unfortunate. I haven’t seen it. Maybe they’ve seen something I haven’t, but I’ll reserve my opinion until I see it. I hope the Republican leadership at least give members of Congress an opportunity to fully vet it.”
