The Fall of Man and God's Curse of The Earth

When Adam fell from grace by eating the forbidden fruit, the Lord did indeed chastise him, but was God's punishment of Adam by proxy, or was it a direct chastisement? Did God curse Adam or did God curse the earth from which Adam (the first created man) was formed from?
