Middle East Update: 1/28/2024

WASHINGTON — The attack that killed three U.S. troops and wounded 34 others Sunday at a base in the Middle East came from a one-way attack drone and represents the latest in an increasingly lethal barrage aimed at bases with American troops in the region.

Iranian-backed militias have mounted more that 150 attacks since Oct. 17 on bases occupied by U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria, according to the Pentagon. The majority of the attacks have been with rockets and one-way attack drones, most of which have been intercepted.

Eight of the wounded were evacuated from Jordan for a higher level of care, U.S. Central Command said in a statement Sunday night. They are in stable condition. The number of wounded is expected to fluctuate as troops seek treatment.

The attack occurred at a logistics support base in Jordan near the border with Syria. About 350 Army and Air Force personnel are based there to support the fight against ISIS militants.

A flurry of reports seemingly suggest the U.S. troop presence in Iraq and Syria, established in 2014-15 to combat the Islamic State group, is coming to an end.

Citing Defense and State Department sources, Foreign Policy reported Wednesday that the White House has grown wary of sustaining the Syria deployment, where an estimated 900 U.S. troops are partnered with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces against the Islamic State. The report clarified that “no definitive decision has been made to leave.”

Would this cause a vacuum?

That Turkey would fill as they did in 2019 when US troops were pulled from Syria and Turkey invaded Syria 3 days later.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Yemen’s Houthi rebels launched a missile Friday at a United States warship patrolling the Gulf of Aden, forcing it to shoot down the projectile, and struck a British vessel as their aggressive attacks on maritime traffic continue.

The attack on the U.S. warship, the destroyer USS Carney, marked a further escalation in the biggest confrontation at sea the U.S. Navy has seen in the Middle East in decades, as Houthi missile fire set another commercial vessel ablaze Friday night.

Early Saturday local time, U.S. forces conducted a strike against a Houthi anti-ship missile that was aimed into the Red Sea and prepared to launch, the U.S. military’s Central Command said.
