Episode 1817: St Valerius of Saragossa
Saint Valerius of Saragossa: A Steadfast Bishop through Persecution
Saint Valerius, also known as San Valero or Sant Valero, served as the Bishop of Saragossa, Spain, from 290 AD until his death in 315 AD. He is revered as the city's patron saint and his feast day is celebrated on January 29th. While details of his early life remain obscure, his legacy is marked by his leadership during a period of intense persecution and his unwavering devotion to his faith.
Early Life and Ministry:
Born sometime in the late 3rd century, Valerius likely hailed from the region surrounding Saragossa. He embraced Christianity and eventually rose through the ranks of the Church, ultimately being chosen as the Bishop of Saragossa around 290 AD. During his episcopacy, he actively participated in religious affairs, attending the Council of Elvira (present-day Granada) in 306 AD, which addressed various issues impacting the early Church in Hispania.
Facing Diocletian's Persecution:
The peaceful atmosphere surrounding Valerius' leadership was soon disrupted by the arrival of the Great Persecution, initiated by Roman Emperor Diocletian in 303 AD. This widespread campaign aimed to eradicate Christianity through brutal methods, including imprisonment, torture, and execution.
Imprisonment and Exile:
Valerius, along with his deacon Saint Vincent, refused to renounce their faith and were apprehended by the Roman authorities. Both were subjected to imprisonment and endured various forms of torture. While accounts differ, Valerius is believed to have been exiled to a remote location near the Pyrenees mountains, eventually returning to Saragossa after the persecution subsided.
Legacy and Veneration:
Despite facing persecution and hardship, Valerius remained a symbol of hope and resilience for the Christian community in Saragossa. He continued to shepherd his flock and rebuild the Church after the storm of persecution. Following his death in 315 AD, he was venerated as a saint, remembered for his unwavering faith, courage, and dedication to his people.
Saint Valerius' enduring legacy is celebrated in various ways:

Feast Day: His feast day on January 29th is marked by religious processions and celebrations in Saragossa.
