stealth camping, and high winds.
2 It consists of a hole dug approximately 12-16” deep into the ground, with a sloping tunnel connecting the base of the pit to the surface.
One hole should be made in a vertical orientation while the other should angle down to connect to the first hole’s base. When you make a fire in the vertical hole, air is drawn into the angled hole to feed the fire with oxygen. Dakota fire holes were often used by American Indians to create easily concealed, highly efficient fires that burned clean, even in windy conditions. They are not ideal for creating a big bonfire to warm you and a bunch of friends, but they are ideal for cooking and staying hidden if you're trying to have a fire without being seen.1 The Dakota fire pit wastes no heat to the sides, so it's ideal for heating stones and water, which you take into your shelter/sleep gear for warmth.
