Run Silent, Run Deep (1958) is a classic World War II submarine thriller starring Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. Gable plays Commander P.J. Richardson, a haunted submarine captain obsessed with sinking the Japanese destroyer Akikaze, nicknamed "Bungo Pete," which destroyed his previous command and took the life of his best friend.

Richardson is assigned to the USS Nerka, but his crew is initially hostile due to his reputation for recklessness and his single-minded focus on revenge. Lieutenant Jim Bledsoe (Lancaster), who was passed over for promotion in favor of Richardson, becomes his executive officer and clashes with him over his tactics.

Despite the tension, Richardson and Bledsoe must learn to work together if they have any hope of tracking down and destroying the Akikaze. The film follows their tense and suspenseful mission, as they navigate the dangers of the Pacific Ocean and face the ghosts of their past.

Run Silent, Run Deep is a well-regarded film, praised for its suspenseful action, strong performances, and exploration of themes of revenge, duty, and leadership. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Actor for Clark Gable.

It was directed by Robert Wise, who also directed The Sound of Music (1965) and West Side Story (1961).
The screenplay was adapted from the novel of the same name by Edward L. Beach Jr., a former submarine commander.
The film was shot on location in Hawaii and California.
The USS Nerka was actually a soundstage built on a Hollywood backlot.
