Tustin police release bodycam of a fatal shooting of a man covered in blood, armed with a knife

Just after 8:30 a.m., officers were called to the area near the Warner and Red Hill avenues intersection about a suspicious person who was holding a large knife, the Tustin Police Department said in a news release. Police were told that the suspect had blood on his hands and clothing.

A man matching the description was holding a knife while walking in traffic lanes on Warner when authorities arrived, Tustin Police Sgt. Colt Kirwan said.

When officers approached the man, he began advancing towards them, knife still in hand, when at least one officer fired shots that struck the suspect, police said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not released by authorities on Sunday pending notification of family.

It was not immediately clear what the blood on the man — seen prior to the police shooting — was from. Detectives were working to determine whether the blood was human or possibly from an animal, Kirwan said.
