TODAY IN PHILOSOPHY OF HISTORY: Lord Acton and the Meaning of Liberty

Wednesday 10 January 2024 was the 190th anniversary of the birth of John Emerich Edward Dahlberg-Acton, 1st Baron Action (10 January 1834 to 19 June 1902), known to posterity as Lord Acton, who was born in Naples on this date in 1834

Acton was admired in his day for his erudition, and he worked for many years on a project intended to cover the history of liberty, but his big book never got written. His works include topical essays touching current events and two courses of lectures. Nevertheless, Lord Acton left a deep impression through those he influenced.
