Description:
In a detailed and tense incident in northwest Denver, two uniformed patrol officers from District One found themselves in a dangerous situation. After finishing a call for service, they planned to meet at a 7-Eleven at Colfax Avenue and Perry Street. Officer Ismael Lopez arrived first and noticed a dark-colored Jeep Patriot, which he recognized from a previous eluding incident on August 13, 2019.
Upon approaching the Jeep, Officer Lopez interacted with a male filling the vehicle's tire with air. Noticing the man's nervous demeanor and recalling the vehicle's involvement in the earlier incident, Officer Lopez conducted a cursory search, discovering a syringe in the man's pocket and deciding to detain him.
At this moment, 31-year-old Jamie Fernandez emerged from the Jeep's passenger seat and fled, ignoring Officer Lopez's commands to stop. The situation escalated rapidly when Corporal Brandon Reyes arrived at the scene, and Fernandez, without warning, pulled out a handgun from her purse and fired in the direction of the officers and the detained male.
Both officers drew their weapons in response. Corporal Reyes fired several rounds while moving towards an alley between Osceola and Perry Streets. Meanwhile, Officer Lopez, still detaining the male, returned fire after Fernandez shot at him, using a dumpster for cover. He reloaded and continued firing until Fernandez dropped her gun and was no longer a threat.
Following the exchange, the officers called for an ambulance and secured the scene. Fernandez was transported to a hospital where she was pronounced deceased. A .380 caliber Ruger handgun, determined to be stolen, was recovered beside her. The investigation revealed that the officers fired a total of 30 rounds, and two spent .380 casings from Fernandez's gun were found, matching the gun recovered. One of Fernandez's rounds was recovered from a business across the street, indicating the danger posed to the officers and the detained male.
