Their findings reveal significant and concerning trends, particularly during the Delta variant surge of the COVID-19 pandemic. The data shows a dramatic escalation in fatalities among pregnant women. In 2021, out of the 1,205 maternal deaths recorded during or within six weeks post-pregnancy, 429 cases listed COVID-19 as a primary or contributing factor on the death certificate. This marks a staggering 321% increase in COVID-19 related maternal deaths compared to the initial wave in 2020. Dr. Pierre Kory and Mary Beth Pfeiffer, in their detailed report, highlight this alarming rise, noting that while overall COVID-19 fatalities in the U.S. increased by about 20% during the same period, the rate of increase in pregnant women was significantly higher, at over fifteen times that rate.
