What’s this - a JBL Tour Pro 2 headset for £20?

No, it's a £20 fake from AliExpress, listed as a MZYJBL TOURPRO 2, but it's a pretty good fake.
It looks very similar to the £200 original and even comes with an interactive storage box with an LCD screen and a faint JBL logo but when you look and listen the differences are soon clear.

The headset arrived in a generic padded bag with no product packaging and inside was the charging case with the two buds inside, two pairs of different sized gels, a short charging cable, and a concertina style user guide. As regards the build quality, I have to say that the headset seems well made and looks pretty upmarket as does the charging case. The user guide was rather hit and miss, poorly printed and hard to read with some pages making no sense at all.

Listening to the headset I was quite pleasantly surprised. It really does not sound too bad. Plenty of bass and good, well defined lower midtones, but higher frequencies sound compressed and abrasive, although varying the EQ using the case helped with this. I have heard much worse and the sound quality is probably OK for the low price. I noticed some drops outs and left/right synchronisation issues but these were frequent at first but quickly rectified and I have to say that now, after several weeks of use, this is no longer a significant issue.

One of the main selling points is the ANC (Active Noise Cancellation) feature but this is not much use. The voice alert tells me it is switched on, but I cannot say I have noticed much difference when it is on other than a faint background hiss. The transparent mode works after a fashion with outside sound now louder than before but overlaid with a very pronounced and deeply annoying hiss.

The interactive LCD screen case offers quite a few features and most of these do actually work, but I doubt if I will ever use them much. The screen always shows the current battery level for the case and the two buds but also offers:
Wallpaper
A small selection of non customisable wallpapers is available.
Language
A small choice of on screen languages
Screen Brightness
Brightness can be changed to a few preset levels.
Playback Timer
Some preset auto-off timers are available
EQ
Some EQ presets are available and they do work but not necessarily for the better.
ANC/Transparent Modes
Do not work in any useful way
Audio Volume
Slider Works OK
Track Control
Play/Pause, Back and Forward work OK
Flashlight
Turns the screen into a (very) mini torch
Find Headset
Works well for both or either bud - but is a bit faint
Silent Now
Turns ANC on for a timed period. Useless.

After a few weeks of use, I would not describe this as an outright scam. It is certainly not a JBL Tour Pro 2 headset but it is a pretty nice budget headset, well made with acceptable audio quality plus a few interesting and unusual features. The specific version I bought is no longer available but the identical headset is available widely across AliExpress from as little as £18 and for that price, it is still a pretty decent buy.
