Mark McNear, a clinical psychologist, shares his story of overcoming addiction and his commitment to healing trauma through the love and support of his family and God. He is the author of Finding My Words: A Ruthless Commitment to Healing Gently After Trauma. In his book, he discusses how addiction is not the problem but how trauma is, and we need to learn to overcome that to fight our demons truly.

Dr. McNear explains that addiction is a symptom of the real problem, not the problem itself. We cannot cure people of addiction if we do not delve into the root cause, which often is behind trauma. It's the trauma we need to help people to heal from, and it takes significant commitment and tools.

Dr. McNear encourages us to have a toolbelt of ways to help heal ourselves. He gives such examples as mindful coloring, tapping, and other grounding exercises to help us self-soothe when we feel dysregulated. Often, because our parents did not know how to regulate themselves, we do not have the necessary tools to help ourselves regulate.

Finally, he discusses how his relationship with God has grown due to his healing. He shares how he could see God's hand in it the whole time.
