The Great Reset is modeled after the Chinese economy, which explains the close relationship between Klaus Schwab and President Xi Jinping, who frequently acknowledge each other in interviews and bizarre award ceremonies. It intends to remove free markets and impose a socialist system for the masses, who will be equally impoverished (promoted as 'equity'), and ruled by monopolistic corporations who will hold all wealth and power. Rectenwald predicts that it will result in shortages of necessary goods and services, "all kinds of social misery", and will finally collapse under its own weight.

Free markets allow for a society in which goods are produced, creating wealth, and allowing for the exchange of that wealth. The Great Reset wishes to create a captive class of non-productive, "state-fed eaters" with no property ownership rights, required to follow authoritarian rule, and Rectenwald argues that this is unsustainable and cannot last for very long. He explains how the Covid pandemic helped to impose the beginnings of The Great Reset, as Klaus Schwab himself has boasted many times.

The Great Reset is the World Economic Forum's contribution to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, which equally intend to impose a rules-based society led by unelected authoritarians who will hold all wealth and power. In June 2019 the World Economic Forum signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations, centred on advancing UN Agenda 2030, with WEF agreeing to finance the climate change agenda, and to provide digital governance for the project.
