DPD officer hurt after hitting black ice, crashing into freeway wall on I-75

Detroit police say one of their officers has been injured in a Tuesday morning crash on I-75.  The accident happened around 6:51 a.m. on I-75 southbound near West Vernor.  Police say the officer was on his way to work when he hit black ice and slammed into the concrete barrier in the center. An off-duty fire department supervisor driving on his way to work saw the accident and saw the officer slumped over. He stopped to help the officer, and then the fire department arrived and extricated him from the vehicle and took him to the hospital. The chief said the officer is conscious and he talked with the officer before speaking to the media around 11 a.m. The chief said he was in critical condition.
