Mark your calendars! A unique astronomical event is approaching in New York—an impending total eclipse, the first in nearly a century.

Scheduled for the afternoon of April 8, this rare phenomenon will unfold over the western and northern regions of New York state. Within a narrow time frame of less than 15 minutes, from 3:15 to 3:30 p.m., the moon will pass between the earth and sun, briefly transforming day into night for approximately 1.5 to 3.5 minutes.

The path of totality, spanning approximately 100 miles in width, will commence in the southwestern part of the state and conclude in northern New York. Notable cities and towns within this trajectory encompass Jamestown, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Watertown, Old Forge, Lake Placid, and Plattsburgh.

Although New York City and Long Island won't be directly within the eclipse's path, they are promised "quite a celestial spectacle."

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for residents and visitors alike, Governor Kathy Hochul shared updates on the state's preparations for this solar event. Governor Hochul emphasized the top priority of ensuring the safety of everyone witnessing this generational spectacle, whether residents or visitors.

Over the past 15 months, nearly two dozen state agencies and authorities have collaborated with local governments to guarantee a secure and memorable experience. The focus has been on raising awareness about the state as a prime location for this extraordinary event, disseminating crucial safety and preparedness information, promoting region-specific viewing activities, and fostering continuous communication between local governments and municipalities.

Anticipation is high, with the state expecting hundreds of thousands of visitors drawn by this rare celestial phenomenon.
