👉🏼 In the heart of Southern Appalachia, it is not uncommon to stumble upon old, abandon graveyards and family cemeteries. Most of these grave are not listed on any maps, and with few human to pass by, they go unnoticed and unattended to for decades.

In the heart of Rabun County, just 2 hours north of Atlanta, there is one of these abandoned graveyards near a lesser known hiking trail. On this hiking trail, in 1972, many famous scene from the movie Deliverance were shot, but it seems that the real scandal isn’t in the factious adaptation of Hollywood, but rather in this cemetery, hidden from the modern world.

I asked my friend Bobbi, otherwise known as The Crazy Grave Lady, to poke around in old records to see if we could figure out who these graves belong to, and she did not disappoint. What she found was a story of brothels, bootleggers, and local thug loved by the town and affectionally called “Aunt Fannie.”

Join us on this episode as we uncover the story of the Kirby family and their place in Appalachia history.
