MDARD Issues Pet Safety Information

As Michigan just faced it’s first round of winter storms, and temperatures are plunging as we approach the coldest weeks of the winter season, The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development reminds all pet owners the best way to keep your animals warm and safe.
Make sure indoor animals are allowed in when they are ready, and make sure outdoor animals have proper shelter. Make sure an animal’s water source does not freeze. Check paws for injury and remove ice and snow clumps caught in them. Be aware that some animals may need more calories to maintain their body heat. And thoroughly cleans areas where antifreeze may have spilled.
