The song is about a woman who complains about her partner's obvious financial insolvency. He says he was doing well financially in 1922, but now he has nothing left! She claims that this is because he has wasted his money on other women and that these mistresses will no longer show any interest in him now that he is poor. She complains of being tricked into a relationship where all he had to offer her was 'a drink of gin'. She ends each verse by asking why he doesn't 'behave' with her, as other men do with their women; so she chases him away, insisting that he go and earn a living to support her.
The song has its roots in blues music and approaches and proceeds with themes common to the times of the Great Depression and prohibition. The narrator, or the woman, is saying that the man is in a state of need because he has been used by other women, so he asks him, not without pretension, for money for his benefit.

La canzone racconta di una donna che si lamenta dell'evidente insolvenza finanziaria del suo partner. Dice che lui stava bene economicamente nel 1922, ma adesso non ha più niente! Reclama che questo è dovuto al fatto che lui ha sprecato il suo denaro per altre donne e che queste amanti non mostreranno più alcun interesse nei suoi confronti adesso che è povero. Lamenta di essere stata tratta con l'inganno in una relazione dove tutto quello che lui aveva da offrirle era 'un drink di gin'. Termina ogni verso chiedendo perché egli non si 'comporti bene' con lei, così come fanno gli altri uomini con le loro donne; quindi lo caccia via insistendo che vada a guadagnarsi da vivere per mantenerla.
La canzone affonda le sue radici nella musica blues e si accosta e procede con tematiche comuni ai tempi della Grande Depressione e del proibizionismo. Il narratore, ovvero la donna, sta dicendo che l'uomo si trova in una condizione di bisogno perché è stato usato da altre donne, quindi gli domanda, non senza pretesa, denaro per il suo beneficio.
