Lamalera: A Tribe With a Whale Hunting Tradition

The residents of Lamalera are descendants of sailors who arrived from South Sulawesi around 500 years ago. Their move from South Sulawesi was motivated by the conquest of the kingdom in Sulawesi carried out by Majapahit during the reign of Hayam Wuruk and Gajah Mada. Later, this group became the forerunner of several Lamalera tribes or clans. As sailors, they are tied to a very strong tradition of hunting and sea exploration
