Jesus said, “Take up your cross and follow me.” In our contemporary worldview, the cross is depicted as a sweet and beautiful idea. It’s depicted both in art and in the tattoos many have depicted on their skin or have hanging from their necklaces. This makes it hard for us to face the truth about the cross—the cross is brutal. It was a punishment so severe and so shameful that in Jesus’s day, Roman citizens couldn’t be crucified because the cross wasn’t designed to kill its victims, it was designed to torture them.
