January 14, 2024: Eruption in Reykjanes Volcanic eruption has started. The eruption area is CLOSED, including Grindavík, until further notice and hiking in the area is prohibited. Please respect the closure and stay away from the area. Please don’t drive Reykjanesbrautin, road 41 (the road to and from the airport) unless it’s necessaire. (Safetravel.is)Eruption started at 7:57.The first estimate of the location is south-southeast of Hagafell.According to the first images from the Coast Guard's surveillance flight, a crack has opened on both sides of the defenses that have begun to be built north of Grindavík.Judging by the pictures, lava is now flowing towards Grindavík. Based on measurements from the Coast Guard's helicopter, the perimeter is now about 450 m from the northernmost houses in the town.
