??? rises to power in Pokémon Silver (Episode 2)

I need to talk to Professor Elm, so I make my way back to Cherrygrove City. While in Cherrygrove City, I talk to an old man named the Guide Gent who loves sharing his wisdom with the youngsters. He gives me some new software for the Pokégear, a nice little map. Right when I leave the city by that shady character I saw outside of Professor Elm's lab. He's so mysterious that he says his name is ???. He then challenges me to a battle, but his Chikorita is no match for my Totodile Dundee. After that, I make my way to Professor Elm's lab, tell a police officer about the shady character that I fought, give Professor Elm the mystery egg, and Professor Elm's aide gives me some Pokéballs.
