The Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his historical "I Have a Dream" on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C on 28 August 1963. One of the most quoted speeches in the last 60 years, about not judging a man by his color but his character, holds us to the question. Are we respecting the teaching of that day? Firmly, til tis day, the answer simply is…no.

Chuck Berry, the founding father of modern rock and roll led the charge to change the culture of the United States with his “fast music and scary guitars”. Fast forward to where we are today, I think the metal community made Chuck Berry proud. One of the hardest things for a black musician, especially a rock or metal musician in the history of our genre, early on, was met like Jackie Robinson was met in baseball. With prejudice and racism. From both whites, who didn’t want them in “their genre” and blacks who said they were race traitors for playing that “loud music”. Who you we to tell a person what genre of music they can listen to or play. Even though, the man whose music was coined, “Rock and Roll” or “The Devil’s Music” inspired millions of black musicians to form musical acts, bands, and be members of a band in whatever the role they play, guitarist, bassist, drummer, backing vox, or front man. There are acts in both Rock and Metal that have been making names for themselves since Chuck Berry first played his guitar. Listen to the chord progression on Johnny B. Goode and today, add in some power chords, bends and hammers, and the song is heavy as fuck today with modern style as it was the first day it was played in the practice spot. My feeling is more black kids today need metal. Why? Let me tell you a little story about this time in my life when I discovered a band that white music elites didn’t want to sign, (that's right folks, the music industry is ran by old white men who don't know fuck all about the band's they're signing. All they see is dollar signs) simply based on their skin color, which is fuckin ridiculous to all of God’s children. Hell, had he wanted us all the same way, He’d have done it, but he didn’t. We’re one race, the human race. Melanin doesn’t mean shit. Remember what Reverend King said! “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” ‘Nuff said. We have failed Reverend King, my fellow Americans, we have failed ourselves. Yet I digress…

As a metal fan, the musical acts I’ve seen, the artists of their genres played some incredible music, and when I heard Living Color’s Cult of Personality for the first time, my God, the talent in that band. And when I saw them on MTV, everyone thought they were white, when I knew they were black. I bought Vivid as fast as I could get to the music store. Opened it up and saw the band and heard they had to try and get it to many labels with no press photo because the white elites in their glass towers didn’t have time for a black rock/metal act. WTF? But y’all signed and raped Chuck Berry out of millions. Right. Got it. Such bullshit. If you want to see an industry rife with racism, it’s the record industry, promoters, and booking agents. I am so proud of all the bands featured on here are doing it on their own and those from my days of the 70s, 80s, and 90s. When it comes to music, I put personal politics aside, why? Ever been to a live show? You don’t know jack from jill and their backstory, but you’re right there singing the songs and moshing along in the pit with them. Why? I’ll let Reverend King finish this intro off with this, “…when we allow freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children, Black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual: Free at last. Free at last. Thank God almighty, we are free at last.”
