Having good manners costs nothing, and take you a long long way. Not having manners will always make things more difficult for you. If you are young and polite, with good manners, know how to shake hands and introduce yourself, know how to navigate social space fluidly, the world will open up and give you all sorts of opportunities. Widespread phone use has made many of us deeply socially unsophisticated and unable to behave in a normal way when with other people.
