Recap of what has happened so far on the second day Israel has put forward two legal advisers to defend itself against allegations it is committing genocide in its war on Gaza. The lawyers have argued that: South Africa’s claims against Israel give a “distorted factual and legal picture”. South Africa has close ties with Hamas, undermining the credibility of its claims.
Hamas is responsible for starting the war with its attack. This gives Israel the right to defend itself, while complying with international humanitarian law. Hamas embeds its military operations in civilian areas, worsening the toll on Palestinians in Gaza. Israel, meanwhile, tries to minimise civilian harm. Calls for Israel to end its operations in Gaza cannot stand. If Israeli forces have broken other rules of conflict, the matter can be handled by “Israel’s robust and independent legal system”. The legal advisers also say they plan to show raw footage of the October 7 attack in order.
