The LORD’s instruction to “make an ark” became a reality as “Bezalel made the ark.” Then Bezalel made the atonement cover of pure gold for the ark, with the two cherubim. This is “the Mercy Seat”.
When the Israelites built the Second Temple after the Babylonian exile (beginning in 516 BC) they did not reconstruct the ark. It had been hidden before the destruction of the first temple in 586BC.
