Wladyslaw Gnys' was the first Polish fighter pilot to shoot down German bomber airplanes in the first day of the war which developed into WW2. His superior was Mieczeslaw Medwiecki, who was the pilot of the first airplane which was shot down in the war, and a relative of Polish MP Grzegorz Braun.
