The armed Islamist faction al-Shabab in Somalia has reportedly taken possession of a United Nations helicopter, along with approximately eight individuals, including passengers and crew, according to local sources informed by the BBC.

The helicopter landed in an area under the control of the group in central Somalia. Conflicting reports suggest that it either made an emergency landing or mistakenly touched down.

Al-Shabab commands significant portions of southern and central Somalia and has affiliations with al-Qaeda, leading a relentless insurgency for nearly two decades.

Galmudug region Security Minister Mohamed Abdi Adan confirmed the seizure of the helicopter to the BBC.
