In the small town of Clifton, the young outcast and son of a prostitute, Scott, does the community's dirty work, sweeping the streets, keeping tidy the local brothel, the saloon, and the bank. With dreams of becoming a fearsome sharpshooter, Scott will find the opportunity of a lifetime when the ageing gunslinger, Frank Talby (Lee Van Cleef), rides into town, and before long, takes the eager apprentice under his wing. Little by little, the timid student will turn into a tough man and a deadly gunfighter, unbeknownst to him, that a strong tie from the past links Talby with the peaceful Clifton.
