The year was 1941, and just like so many other Americans at that time, Elmer "Jack" Hetzel felt it was his duty as an American to join the military and do his part to in the war against Nazi Germany. He didn't let the fact that he only had a 3rd grade education stop him either. Assigned to the 511th Fighter Squadron, 405th Fighter Group, he received credit for participating in 5 major battles. After the war, he chose to re-enlist and continued to serve for a total of 20 years in the US Army and despite his lack of formal education, retired as a professor of military science at Texas A&M University. During (and after) those years of teaching he also served in ministry as a Christian missionary to the armed forces in Europe. At the age of 99, he received an honorary high school diploma AND an honorary doctorate. Dr. Jack Hetzel has authored 12 books and continues to preach and teach today at 102 years of age.
