Koalas don't just sleep all day - January 2022
Koalas are often mistaken as sleepy creatures, but they're more complex than their napping reputation suggests. These marsupials are primarily nocturnal, spending their nights foraging for eucalyptus leaves, their main food source. However, they do sleep for extended periods, averaging around 18 to 22 hours per day, conserving energy due to their low-nutrient diet.
Despite their sedentary appearance, koalas are agile climbers, using their sharp claws and strong limbs to move through trees with ease. Their unique digestive system allows them to process the tough eucalyptus leaves, which are toxic to many other animals. Koalas are also known for their distinct personalities and social behaviors within their territories.
