Unveiling a perplexing incident in Brooklyn, a cluster of individuals faced arrest when a clandestine tunnel was discovered by construction crews along the Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights. The NYPD reported that the group unlawfully accessed 770 Eastern Parkway by causing damage to a wall.

In the midst of a disagreement surrounding a covertly dug tunnel adjacent to a historic Brooklyn synagogue, a group of Hasidic Jewish worshippers found themselves in police custody, sparking a confrontation between law enforcement and those attempting to defend the makeshift passageway.

The revelation of the tunnel, located at the Chabad-Lubavitch world headquarters in Crown Heights, prompted an urgent structural inspection by the city on Tuesday. The edifice at 770 Eastern Parkway, formerly the residence of the movement's leader, Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson, attracts thousands of visitors annually. Recognizable for its Gothic Revival facade, replicas of this revered building have been replicated worldwide.

According to Motti Seligson, a Chabad spokesperson, a "group of extremist students" surreptitiously breached the walls of a vacant building behind the headquarters, creating an underground passage beneath office buildings and lecture halls that ultimately connected to the synagogue.

Efforts to repair the damaged walls were impeded by extremists seeking to preserve their unauthorized access. This led to a confrontation between the property's management and those insisting on the passageway's preservation.

In response to a disorderly group trespassing and damaging a wall, the police were called to the building on Monday afternoon. Video footage captured the ensuing standoff, with officers confronting individuals within a hollowed-out space, leading to altercations and damage to property.

Ten people were arrested for criminal mischief and criminal trespass, and one for obstructing governmental administration.

The timeline and purpose of the tunnel's construction remain unclear. The city's building safety agency is currently assessing the structural damage, and the building is temporarily closed pending a safety review.

Expressing distress over the incident, Chabad Lubavitch officials emphasized the hope for the swift restoration of the sanctity and decorum of the holy place.

Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson, who led the Chabad-Lubavitch for over four decades, transformed a devastated Hasidic religious community after the Holocaust. The headquarters was also central to the 1991 Crown Heights riots, triggered by a tragic accident involving the rabbi's motorcade.
