The modern toilet paper as we know it today began to emerge in the 19th century. In 1857, Joseph Gayetty of the United States introduced the first commercially available toilet paper.

It was sold in packages of flat sheets and was medicated with aloe. Gayetty's product was marketed as a medical accessory that helped prevent hemorrhoids.

Despite Gayetty's innovation, toilet paper took a while to become popular in the Western world, primarily due to cultural attitudes and the availability of alternative materials.

The Scott Paper Company, founded in 1879, was a significant player in changing these attitudes. They began selling toilet paper on a roll, a format that is now ubiquitous.
