In 1960s Ireland, where religious icons were commonplace, the image of President John Kennedy stood as a beacon of the American dream, igniting a youthful fascination within me. This admiration, born from Ireland's history of emigration to the U.S. following the famine, remained strong even after the tragedy of Kennedy's assassination when I was only seven.
My faith in the American democratic ideal, though tested, was fortified by the film "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington." This cinematic masterpiece, showcasing a battle between integrity and corruption, reignited my belief in the principles of America.
